Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani (1372–1449 CE) was one of the greatest hadith scholars in Islamic history and is widely regarded as the leading hadith authority of his era. Born in Cairo, he mastered hadith, fiqh, history, biography, and Arabic literature at a young age. He followed the Shafi'i school of law and served multiple times as the Chief Judge of Egypt. His expertise in the sciences of hadith earned him the title "Amir al-Mu'minin fil Hadith" (Commander of the Faithful in Hadith), a distinction granted only to the most outstanding hadith scholars.
His greatest achievement was producing monumental works that remain indispensable references for scholars worldwide. Most notably, he authored Fath al-Bari , the most celebrated commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari , a work that took him over two decades to complete. He also made significant contributions to hadith criticism, narrator evaluation, Islamic history, and biographical literature. His books continue to be studied in seminaries and universities throughout the Muslim world.
